Desert poplars

"A thousand years standing, a thousand years on the ground, a thousand years without corrupting": a symbol of resilience and permanence in the face of wind and sand.

Jiayuguan, the Western Gate

Bastion of the Great Wall, starting point for travelers to the deserts. It embodies the border, protection and the impetus of travel on the Silk Road.

Kalaviṅka

A celestial bird born from the intersection of myths: India, Greek winged angels, Taoist immortals.

In Dunhuang, he takes on the form of a crane and a human face. His voice, purer than music, symbolizes the transmission and meeting of cultures.

Under the sandy skies and desert winds, the caravans that left Chang'an traced their route westward.
This painting is inspired by the great initiatory journey of the Silk Road, nicknamed in ancient texts “凿空之旅”: “the journey that pierces the void”.

On either side of the painting, steep cliffs and deep gorges frame a caravan on the move.
Around her, the blue birds of Dunhuang accompany the progress, while the sacred sounds of the Kalavinka (bird-nymphs of Buddhism) resonate from the heights.

On the ground, desert poplars (胡杨) grow vigorously, embodying life in the heart of aridity.
Among their branches emerge celestial apsaras, winged horses, jewel flowers and ancient instruments: a world suspended between spirituality, nature and legend.

In the center: the Jiayuguan Pass, the last bastion of the Great Wall to the west.
It was here that Zuo Zongtang set out to reconquer Xinjiang, that Huo Qubing led his campaigns against the Xiongnu, and that the monk Xuanzang crossed the border to seek out Buddhist scriptures.

Beyond the ramparts, the desert stretches to infinity.
Mingsha Shan and the Crescent Moon spring appear in the distance, among the caravans that advance slowly under a sky of golden dust.

The whole painting follows a narrative and panoramic composition, where the caravan becomes the visual thread, the “desert boat” that crosses centuries and opens a new chapter of the Silk Road.
