Notre choix de la soie 18 mommes pour nos carrés de soie

Why do we choose 18 momme silk twill? The “golden weight” of a silk scarf.

Momme is a simple way to understand the “thickness” and density of silk. The higher the number, the denser the fabric tends to be, with more body and less transparency. On a scarf, you feel the difference mainly in three areas: the drape, the volume of the knot, and durability.

For example, 14 momme is lighter and airier, 16 momme is more balanced, while 18 momme is the closest to the classic feel of a high end silk scarf: light, yet with structure. That is exactly why we chose 18 momme. It strikes the right balance between lightness and substance.

What changes when you wear 18 momme silk?

1. More structure

A scarf reveals its quality most clearly the moment you tie it. At 18 momme, silk holds its shape better than lighter weights:

  • a fuller knot

  • a cleaner silhouette

  • a drape that avoids a limp or “tired” look

If you like wearing your scarf around the neck, in your hair, or on a bag, this added stability is immediately noticeable.

2. A more refined print: deeper colours, sharper details

High end scarves often feature rich patterns with fine details. Silk twill is naturally well suited to printing, and at 18 momme, the fabric carries colour more beautifully:

  • deeper, more stable colours

  • crisper lines

  • a denser, more “present” visual impressio

3. More durable: ideal for an accessory meant to be worn often

A silk carré is an everyday accessory. You tie it, fold it, and it lives with you. Thanks to a denser and more stable structure, 18 momme silk generally stands up better to daily wear. It feels like a piece that stays with you for years, rather than a delicate item reserved for rare occasions.

Why not go beyond 18 momme?

It is easy to assume that thicker always means better. In reality, beyond 18 momme the fabric becomes heavier and more “present”, and that does not necessarily make it more comfortable to wear, quite the opposite.

A silk carré is worn close to the face and around the neck, sometimes all day long. When silk becomes too dense, you feel the added weight, the knot becomes bulkier, and the overall look can feel less light, less natural. That is not the experience we are aiming for.

Frequently asked questions

What does 18 momme mean?

Momme indicates silk density. The higher the number, the denser and more structured the silk tends to be. On a scarf, this affects the drape, the knot, and durability.

Is 18 momme too thick?

No. 18 momme is still a lightweight silk, simply more structured. It ties more beautifully and holds its shape better.

Why does 18 momme cost more?

Because the fabric uses more silk and a higher weave density, which improves the hand feel, the print result, and long term wear.
